WINES…- a little bit history

EGER –with its more than thousand-years old history ,and  its historic sights and its lovely situation,the thermal- and medicinal waters attract every year  a big multitude of tourists. Something else? Yes! The famous wine, of course! The population of Eger and of its surroundings produce here  for more  over thousand years grapes res. wines.

The Romans brought wines to the country, and by the fifth century ,there are records of extensive vineyards in Hungary. After the Turkish occupation the region in Northern Hungary was already a well-known for its wine production.

 

The town is the birthplace of the most famous red wine of the country, the Bulls Blood of Eger! From 1886, the phylloxera epidemic hit the country hard ,after this big disaster the wine- growers tried to plant new brand of grapes. In the last decade they had proved, that the wines of the region, Leányka, Királyleányka, Hárslevelű, Olaszrizling,Muskotály, Tramini, Szürkebarát and Chardonnay are a big rivals abroud, too.

 

In the years coming,-after experts the Egri Kékfrankos, Blauburger, Merlot, Cabernet, Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and the Pinot Noir  will hit  international success.
